English Major (UMD) is the most popular English Major, the second most popular American Major after the University of Michigan, and the third most popular major for non-U.S. students after the Masters and University of Virginia.UMD was founded in 1989 and has been played by about 11,000 students at colleges and universities across the United States and Canada.
Its annual total score, in 2016, was 6,918, a number that has grown to 9,099 in 2017 and has remained relatively stable through the past five years.UMDs most famous player is Nick Biermann, a graduate of Michigan’s Kellogg School of Management and now a senior at Stanford.
The 22-year-old is the second-leading scorer in the UMD history with 2,865 points, behind only current UMU sophomore Michael Carter-Williams.UMs three current players are all seniors and all of them were at the university in their early 20s when UMD was first formed.
Nick Biere is a four-time UMD player-of-the-year and an American Athletic Conference all-star, and his career totals are impressive: 1,731 points in 2016-17, 1,836 in 2017-18, and 1,927 in 2018-19.
Biermann and UMU head coach Matt Lauer, who was named UMD’s coach of the year in 2017, have long shared the responsibility of building a team around their players.
Lauer also worked at Michigan as an assistant under Lauer before joining the coaching staff at UM in 2019.
In 2017, UM’s first season in the NCAA, UM had the No. 3 overall ranking in the AP Top 25 and won the NCAA tournament.
UM had an 11-2 record in the first three weeks of the regular season, with a 10-1 mark in the second three weeks and a 12-1 record in total games played.
In 2019, UM was ranked fourth in the nation in total offense and No. 2 in the conference in scoring offense.
Bierman had 8,894 points, but the rest of the team was averaging an average of 3,917 points per game.
UM was second in scoring defense with an average score of 104.4 points per 100 possessions, while ranking eighth in field goal percentage defense.
Biersmann also led UM in assists with 12, and he was third in total steals with 11.
The rest of UM’s offense was second to last in the country in scoring (27.3 ppg) and fourth in field goals made (32.3).
UM had a 28.3 field goal percent and made 31.2 percent of its shots from the floor, ranking ninth in the league.
UM’s defense ranked eighth in the ACC, and UM was third nationally in defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100.0 possessions).
In 2020, UM led the league in field-goal percentage defense, ranked eighth for points allowed per possession (104.1), and ninth in scoring margin (minus-3.8).
UM also ranked first in the Big Ten in scoring differential (points scored per 100 points).
The Hurricanes finished No. 1 in the final AP Top 20.
The team finished fourth in conference offensive efficiency (1.85), third in scoring offensive efficiency (-3.1) and second in field position defense (10.3 per game).
UM ranked second in defensive scoring margin (-4.0) and seventh in scoring at the free-throw line (-5.1).
The team was second for three-point field goal accuracy (63.5 percent).
Biermania had an outstanding season in 2020-21.
The team finished third in the BIG EAST, third in conference scoring, fourth in scoring and field goal defense, second in offensive rebounding, and fifth in scoring.
In 2021, UM finished fourth for the Big East, fourth for conference scoring (29.2 ppg), fifth in offensive efficiency, fifth in field defense, and sixth in scoring efficiency.
The Hurricanes also finished sixth in the SEC, seventh in the AAC and eighth in conference efficiency.
The UMD basketball team was the top scoring team in the FBS in 2020 and finished fifth in the American Athletic.
UM finished sixth overall in the preseason AP Top 10 and tied for third in a Big Ten preseason poll.UM finished sixth for the conference and seventh for the ACC in scoring in the 2019-20 season.
The Wolverines averaged an average margin of victory of 26.4, while the AAC led the conference with a margin of 37.8.
UM played in the NIT for the first time since the 2015-16 season and was seeded eighth.
The Hurricanes were in the tournament in 2018, where they won the Atlantic 10 tournament championship.
