English major Buys major in English and major in Chinese in 2019, according to Sports Business Daily.
The list of major universities that will be offering majors in English this fall comes as more schools across the country offer English as a second language (ESL) courses, including UC Davis, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA and UC Irvine.
For the first time, UC Irvine will offer ESL majors.
The school’s online class, the ESL First ESL Program, is available to students from age 9 to 25.
UC Irvine announced the major in 2018.
In 2019, the school will add courses in ESL, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and other subjects, said university spokeswoman Lisa J. Sutter.
It will also add courses that focus on the intersection of academic and social justice, as well as students’ work experience and their personal development, said David H. Harkins, associate vice chancellor for university affairs.
Sutter added that UC Irvine has an online portfolio of programs that are available for ESL students and that students have the option to register in any of the classes they choose.
“We’re continuing to expand the offerings of the university in terms of the breadth and depth of our offerings,” Harkings said.
Currently, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, UC Merced and UC Santa Cruz offer ESL programs, but only students at UC Riverside can take those classes.
The university also offers a second program, which is available for students from grade 10 to 18.
The programs have no SAT or ACT requirement.
In 2018, UC Davis offered an ESL program that was offered by its Spanish Language Center, which was founded by English major Christopher L. Sosa.
On the 2017-2018 academic year, UC Los Angeles offered an English program for Spanish majors, and in 2019 the university announced it would expand its program to include English majors.
